History

The Cornerstone School is a non-profit, non-denominational, independent school that was formed by a group of educators in 1982.

The long range goal of the founders was to offer an accredited program from preschool through fifth grade.  The plan could be compared to the slow, steady hand of a mason building a home.  First, the foundation was poured.  Then one brick at a time was added until the structure was complete.  So it was that Cornerstone laid its foundation during the 1982-1983 school year with a preschool program.  With each successive year, another grade was added.  Fifth grade became a reality in 1987.  The school earned accreditation by the Florida Council of Independent Schools and the Florida Kindergarten Council.

In the Fall of 1995, Cornerstone launched the first of the middle grades.  Within the next few years seventh and eighth grades were added.  With the completion of the middle school program the original goals of our founders were achieved and surpassed.  As Cornerstone moved into the new millennium, our goals continued to grow with our students.  Many Cornerstone students enter into our program in Preschool and go on to graduate the program in Eighth Grade.  Those who join us later in their education often comment on the differences they find here.  Students, Parents and Educators enjoy the close community that was built brick by brick over  our 26 year history.

Today, The Cornerstone School honors our founders by holding true to the ideals that gave rise to this unique educational experience.  Cornerstone students are known throughout our community as shining examples of the benefits of independent education.  Cornerstone Middle School students frequently have their choice of high school programs including International Baccalaureate (IB), Engineering and Manufacturing Institute of Technology (EMIT), and Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE).  Our students' acceptance rates in these programs are measurably higher than any other public, private or charter school in Marion County.  We are very proud of our Cornerstone graduates and continue to support them in high school and beyond.
