Academics

As a course of study, the curriculum at Cornerstone is based on the content and process knowledge as defined by the standards set forth by the various National Subject associations.  These are sourced in the “Compendium of Standards” developed by MCREL. (These are far more detailed and comprehensive than the Sunshine State Standards.)

For quick reference these standards are available online at : http://www.mcrel.org

Within each subject area Cornerstone has developed a Scope and Sequence appropriate for each grade level grouping K -2; 3rd -5th and 6th-8th.  The Scope and Sequence provides greater insight into the expected level of understanding required at each grade level. At The Cornerstone School, the emphasis on learning is not on the content (factual level) of learning, but on the Higher Order Thinking Skills (Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning objectives), where the student’s ability to transfer and apply learning to problem solving real life based situations, is the focus of teaching intent.

The goal and responsibility of the teacher is to facilitate an environment which socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively allows for each student to develop into an independent self directed learner and critical thinker who can problem solve confidently, assertively, collaboratively and respectfully.
