A STEM opportunity for Girls!
In 2014, women made up 47% of the US workforce. The National Science Foundation reported women are equally represented in biological and medical science fields, but still significantly underrepresented in Engineering (13%) and Computer Science and Mathematics (2) fields. Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) aims to change that. EYH is an organization dedicated to providing gateway STEM experiences to girls that spark interest in STEM activities and careers.
EYH provides a full day conference introducing young women to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). To date, over 500 young women have participated in multiple hands on work shops throughout the day long conference. Past workshops have included:
- Science: making lip balm to demonstrate chemistry principles
- Technology creating a computer app
- Engineering: designing and building a roller coaster within a specified budget
- Math: identifying patient zero using statistics in a contagious disease outbreak
Year after year, young women leave the event knowledgeable about opportunities in STEM careers and eager to pursue STEM course work in their educational future.
This year the University of North Florida and the Expanding Your Horizons program will be holding the 2016 conference on Saturday, March 5th at the UNF University Center.
If you have a female student....or if YOU are a female student, 5th - 8th grade, please contact Mr. Moseley (via email; email@example.com) expressing your desire to attend the conference. There is 20.00 fee for attending the conference. The STEM Department. at The Cornerstone School will underwrite your student's conference fee at $10.00 per tuition (your cost, $10.00)
We will take registrations until February 26th.
Transportation to the event: For those that are challenged with transportation to the event, Mr. Moseley will help arrange (not provide) transportation solutions (car-pooling).
More ROBOTIC NEWS!
The Cornerstone FIRST TECHNICAL CHALLENGE Robotics team continues to move forward in league competition. The Robotic Bacon Eating Narwhals took part in a special competition, "Judgement Day" in Tampa this past weekend (Jan. 16).
This competition was unique in that the team members were directly interviewed by a panel of judges about several aspects of their team participation during the season. Questions were asked about Mechanical Design, Team Budget (Income and Expenditures), Problem Solving Strategies, and STEM Outreach efforts.
The next phase of the "Judgement Day" experience was a 20 minute exhibition of the Narwhal team robot, "Pizza Chip". Chip was put through a series of maneuvers and tasks that demonstrated the robot's ability to perform several different tasks required in a competition event.
The Narwhals team equipped themselves well and were able to answer all questions in a mature and competent manner.
The final event of the season is scheduled for this coming weekend (Jan 23) in Tampa at the Hillsborough League Championship.
Good Luck Narwhals!

To help kick this new program off we will have the good folks of The Martial Arts Center coming by to visit our classrooms next week for a brief announcement...and then they will follow that up with a free preview week (to be announced). You/Your student will be able to come to an afterschool class for a preview of what to expect if you choose to enroll.

The Feelin’ Groovy Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Cornerstone Feb. 8-12. Get ready to feel the love – the love of books.
Book Fair is an exciting time on campus that gives children a chance to select and purchase their own books – and research shoes children are much more likely to read a book they select themselves. Book Fair selections are carefully curated for appropriateness and grade level and many are priced at less than $5.
For parents. Book fair is a groovy opportunity to volunteer, help our school, and meet and mingle with other parents. A few volunteer shifts are still available from 12:30-3 p.m.. Email Cherie Foster (firstname.lastname@example.org) or text at 352.916.0948 if you would like to be a part of the book fair. Thank you to everyone who has signed up to help!
Did you know that many of the Smart Boards in your children's classroom were purchased by proceeds from the book fair? Not only do all book fair proceeds directly benefit our school, the Scholastic book fair is a major contributor to individual classroom libraries and helps build the collection in our resource center.
Plan now to support our book fair Feb 8-12. Peace. Love. Books.
